Stacking the Shelves Saturday- 3/10/18

Stacking the Shelves is a weekly meme hosted by Tynga’s Reviews and Reading Reality all about sharing the books we are adding to our shelves, whether physical or virtual.

I haven’t participated in STS since early January, so this is a roundup of all the books I’ve acquired since then.

Physical Books:

35103171

I’ve only added one physical book to my shelves, but what a book it is! The Mermaid and Mrs. Hancock by Imogen Hermes Gowar is one of my most-anticipated releases of 2018 and I am so excited to have a copy of this stunning debut. Gowar’s evocative and atmospheric Georgian historical novel was just longlisted for the Baileys Women’s Prize for Fiction as well.

eBooks:

I’ve wanted to read Geraldine Brooks novel about the plague, Year of Wonders for ages. Thanks to a great Kindle deal, maybe I’ll finally get to it soon.

I also snapped up another Ann Patchett novel, The Patron Saint of Liars. This is actually Patchett’s first novel and is set in a home for unwed mothers in the 1960’s. I think I will read more of Patchett’s later works before picking this one up, but I’m happy to have it waiting  for me on my Kindle app.

eARCs:

I cannot wait to read the delightful-sounding Dear Mrs. Bird by AJ Pearce. This book sounds almost tailor-made to my interests: it’s set in London during the Blitz, features a female journalist, and is all about letter-writing.

Another WWII era novel, The Taster by V. S. Alexander is about a young German woman who is assigned to be one of Hitler’s official food tasters. This sounds like an interesting slice of history and an engaging read.

Echo Hall by Virginia Moffatt follows three generations of women at their familial estate during three wars. Family secrets, country houses. tragic love stories, and wartime drama are all right up my alley.

A timely, feminist campus novel, The Red Word by Sarah Henstra is about rape culture and Greek life. It has been compared to The Marriage Plot by Jeffrey Eugenides and The Secret History by Donna Tartt.

Have you read any of these? What book(s) have you been adding to your shelves lately?

  1. I read The Mermaid and Mrs Hancock earlier this year and enjoyed it, so I hope you do too! Dear Mrs Bird sounds great, doesn’t it? I have a review copy of that one too, which I’m looking forward to reading.
