Top Ten Tuesday: Summer Reads on my TBR List

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly bookish meme created by The Broke and the Bookish blog, and now hosted at That Artsy Reader Girl.

Last year, I put together a TTT Beach Reads list. This week, I decided to look through my books to find Summer Reads on my TBR List. These are NOT books I’m planning to read this summer – those can be found on my 20 Books of Summer list – but are instead the unread books I own that I think would make for great summer reading.

 

 

 

Remarkable Creatures by Tracy Chevalier 

The English seaside during the Regency era becomes the setting for a phenomenal discovery: the first dinosaur fossils. This historical novel is the fictionalized story of Mary  Anning and Elizabeth Philpot, two women whose fossil collections changed the scientific community. I think this would be lovely to curl up with on a rainy summer afternoon.

The Shell Seekers by Rosamunde Pilcher

A family drama set in Cornwall sounds like the perfect summer read to me. I can easily imagine becoming engrossed in The Shell Seekers with waves crashing in the background.

Fates and Furies by Lauren Groff

This story of a dramatic marriage told from the perspectives of both the husband and the wife, sounds like a gripping read. I’m sure it would pair well with a glass of wine enjoyed al fresco under an umbrella.

Summer at Tiffany by Marjorie Hart

Summer at Tiffany is the memoir of one young woman’s unforgettable summer spent working at the famed jewelry store in the 1940’s. It sounds utterly charming; so much so, that I may have to pick it up soon!

The Corfu Trilogy by Gerald Durrell

I adore the TV series The Durrells, and look forward to spending more time with the eccentric and witty family. After all, who wouldn’t want to spend the summer in Corfu?!

 

 

The Improbability of Love by Hannah Rothschild

This contemporary novel set in the art world features an interesting cast of characters, including a famous painting everyone wants to get their hands on. The Improbability of Love sounds like a fun, slightly soapy, novel that will be an easy and entertaining read.

Crocodiles on the Sandbank by Elizabeth Peters

Summer reading isn’t complete without a bit of mystery, and this one sounds right up my alley. Egyptologist Amelia Peabody breaks the mold of the traditional nineteenth-century woman, as she seeks travel, adventure, friendship, scholarship, and romance.

The Cazalet Chronicles by Elizabeth Jane Howard

I own the first three books in The Cazalet Chronicles series, and I think it would be so much fun to read them over the course of a summer. This sweeping series follows an English family from the 1930’s to the 1950’s, and would no doubt provide hours of entertainment when it’s too hot to do anything besides read.

Beautiful Ruins by Jess Walter

Set partly in Italy and Hollywood, Beautiful Ruins is practically tailor-made for poolside reading. It’s described as an engrossing story with vivid characters that flits across decades and jumps around the world.

The Perfect Summer: England 1911, Just Before the Storm by Juliet Nicolson

I like to have a nonfiction book on the go during the summer, and this one sounds ideal. The Perfect Summer recounts the halcyon four months of the hottest summer on record; it’s a snapshot of a world that was about to change forever.
