Tome Topple Round 6 TBR List

The Tome Topple Readathon is hosted by booktuber Thoughts on Tomes. The goal of this readathon is to read big books that are over 500 pages. There is no pressure to read multiple books or to even finish one. Simply making progress on the larger tomes from your shelf is enough.

#TomeTopple Round 6 runs from June 29th – July 12th

Here’s what I’m planning to read:

Romantic Outlaws by Charlotte Gordon (674 pp)

I should finish this as planned before the end of the month, although I’ll be sad to say goodbye to the remarkable Marys.

Testament of Youth by Vera Brittain (582 pp)

On the other hand, there’s no way I’ll be completing Testament of Youth in June. The somber subject matter and the fact that my beautiful hardcover edition isn’t very comfortable to read, has meant that I haven’t made as much progress as I had hoped.  I’m enjoying savoring Vera’s powerful prose however.

Two other tomes from my #20BooksofSummer list are:

Coming Home by Rosamunde Pilcher (752 pp) and The Night Watch by Sarah Waters (560 pp), both historical fiction novels set (at least partly) in WWII era England. Hopefully I can finish at least one of them over the course of the readathon.

Are you planning to participate in #TomeTopple? What’s the longest book on your summer reading list?

    1. Thanks, Juliana! Same here. I guess it was too ambitious to want to finish both in the same month, but now that RO is done we can both focus on Testament.

  1. I’m TomeToppling with the second half of “Evelina” by Frances Burney. A tome-wanna-be at only 455 pages. Then “Grapes of Wrath” by John Steinbeck, 619 pages. I thought about “Testament of Youth” but… at this time I am not up for intense and sad. Let’s Read!

    1. Happy to hear you’re participating, Christina! Hope you’ve enjoyed Evelina, and I look forward to hearing your thoughts on Grapes of Wrath. Testament is a phenomenal read, but it is immensely sad. I’m definitely having to break my reading up with happier books. Enjoy the readathon!

  2. I’m way behind on Testament of Youth, I won’t be finished this month either. I have about 300 pages left so I might just finished it in the next two weeks so I should probably sign up for TomeToppler!

    1. I’m glad to hear I’m not the only one, Karen! It sounds like we were around the same point in the reading. Hopefully we’ll both be able to finish soon!

  3. Love this tag! I seem to have toppled my 20 Books of Summer tomes already – How To Survive A Plague and The Heart’s Invisible Furies were both well over 500 pages. Happily the remaining books are a bit shorter.

  4. I love the sound of Testament to Youth. Will have to read that at some point. I’d love to take part in Tome Topple but don’t really have a lot of thick books on my TBR. It’ll definitely have to be a goal of mine next year to read longer books.

    1. I’d highly recommend Testament of Youth, Ceri. It’s a heartbreaking yet powerful read, and one I won’t soon forget. Tome Topple is a great way to get to those longer books when you do have them on your TBR.

  5. The longest book on my 20 Books of Summer list is Stephen King’s Wizard and Glass (#4 of the Dark Tower series.) I started it back in February/march but then had to turn it in to the library because it still had holds. I never picked it back up. I finally bought myself a copy so that I didn’t have to worry about holds. My paperback copy has over 1000 pages! I’m planning on reading that one last on my 20 Books list! 🙂

  6. I don’t fear long books. I think my longest book on my TBR is the unabridged version of Gibbon’s History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire (I read an abridged version years ago). My Kindle says I have 75 hours of estimated reading time left on it. Barnes and Noble has an edition that is 4100 pages. For a single book (I know it’s technically 6 volumes, but it’s usually packaged on the Kindle as one now) I think that’s the longest book I ever tried to tackle.

I occasionally read books that are 1200 pages or so though. Usually nonfiction.

    1. Very glad to hear that you’re not intimidated by long tomes, Brooke! You’re right that nonfiction tends to be longer, and I think it would be difficult to come up with a book that was longer than Decline and Fall.

  7. What a fun tag. I love this idea especially because I love long books. How’s it going with your historical fiction reads? I haven’t heard of either and I’m a fan of historical fiction so I’m interested in what you think although I’m trying to read the books I already have. Whew.

    1. Thanks, and yay for historical fiction! I’ve read and loved Coming Home by Rosamunde Pilcher. It’s a gentle, cozy read that was so much fun to escape into. It’s a coming-of-age story with a vivid setting, a lovely cast of characters, wartime drama, and romance.

I haven’t started The Night Watch yet, but have absolutely loved every Sarah Waters’ novel I’ve read so far. Her writing is so vivid and engaging, and her books are always full of surprises. If you enjoy historical fiction that’s a bit grittier, I recommend giving one of her novels a try.
