Top Ten Tuesday: Recent Binge Watches

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly bookish meme created by The Broke and the Bookish blog, and now hosted at That Artsy Reader Girl.

This week’s topic is: Bingeworthy TV Shows, but I’m focusing on some of my most Recent Binge Watches.

I also chose to highlight shows that may be a bit lesser known.

Killing Eve

Sandra Oh and Jodie Comer deserve all the awards for their stellar performances in this cat and mouse show about an assassin and the security services operator who is out to stop her. It’s dark, disturbing, comedic, and hypnotic. What’s more, Killing Eve is a rare  female-led project. (No wonder it’s so good!)

All the cliff-hangers will have you racing through the episodes to see what happens next. I’m dying of anticipation for Season 2.

Sharp Objects

I really loved the Southern Gothic vibe of this twisted and compelling miniseries. The small town setting, disturbing family dynamics, use of flashbacks, and strong performances made this a memorable watch.

Although I haven’t read Gillian Flynn’s novel, I thought I had the mystery figured out early on. However, the final scene and the unforgettable last line were perfectly shocking. If you watch this one, make sure to stay tuned until after the final credits.

The Wine Show

Mathew Goode plus Mathew Rhys plus Wine plus Italy. What more needs to be said?!

X Company

I’m utterly fascinated by stories about the allied resistance during WWII, so I was very excited to learn about this Canadian period drama. To be honest, this show didn’t quite live up to my high expectations (it’s a tad formulaic), but it is easy and entertaining viewing. The costumes and period detail are wonderful too.

Lovesick

This is such a fun, funny, and heartfelt romantic comedy series. The characters are flawed yet lovable and you can’t help but root for them all.

I have my fingers crossed that there will be a fourth season. I need more of Dylan, Evie, Luke, and Angus’s fantastic friendships, hilarious hijinks, and romantic entanglements.

Sweetbitter

As is the case with the book, I absolutely devoured this show. I wasn’t always sure what I thought about the storyline or the characters, but I kept coming back for extra helpings. The NYC setting and restaurant world drama are an intoxicating combination.

A Place to Call Home

This is one of my favorite period drama shows, and one that I wish was more well-known. It’s set in Australia in the 1950’s and centers on a wealthy land-owning family and a Jewish nurse who comes to work at the local hospital.

A Place to Call Home is perfectly addicting. It’s just the right amount of soapy and moving. If you enjoy both Downton Abbey and Call the Midwife, I think you’d enjoy this gem too.

Raised by Wolves

Raised by Wolves is a quirky comedy about an eccentric working class family in Wolverhampton, England. It’s written by Caitlin Moran and her sister, and is based on their own childhood (although set now).

The characters are charming and the soundtrack is excellent. Sadly, there were only two short seasons before it got canceled. I’ve read rumors of an American remake, but I hope that ill-advised idea doesn’t actually come to fruition.

Younger

My favorite summer show to binge is the super fun Younger. I love the focus on fashion, women’s friendships, the publishing world, and NYC. I’m so glad it’s been renewed for another season.

If you’re a Younger fan, let me know if you’re #TeamJosh or #TeamCharles! (I’m a Charles girl all the way)

Peaky Blinders

If I were forced to pick a favorite TV show, Peaky Blinders might just be it. It’s a dark, atmospheric period drama set in post-WWI England that features pretty much anything you could want in a show. There are gangsters, family drama, politics, history, romance, fabulous costumes, and a killer contemporary soundtrack.

I can’t get enough of the Shelby clan and fall even harder for the series upon each re-watch. The acting and cinematography are top-notch. Do yourself a favor and head over to Netflix ASAP if you haven’t yet experienced this brilliant show.

Have you watched any of these bingeable shows?

  1. I’ve also been watching Sharp Objects but I haven’t seen the last episode so no spoilers! I also like Lovesick. I binged it on netflix not too long ago, and it was exactly what I needed. I’ll have to check out some of the others! I did my TTT on TV shows based on books (and I gave myself some self-imposed rules to make it a little harder) https://franlaniado.wordpress.com/2018/09/04/top-ten-tuesday-tv-shows-based-on-books/

    1. Lovesick was such a lovely surprise, and exactly what I needed at the time too. It’ll definitely be a fun show to re-watch in the future. I’ll be interested to hear what you think about the ending of Sharp Objects; it seems to be pretty polarizing. And make sure to watch through to the final credits!

      1. Yeah, I’ve heard that about the ending, but I’m trying to avoid spoilers until I’ve had a chance to watch! I’m curious as to whether it’s faithful to the book or not…

  2. I’ve heard so many great things about Peaky Blinders but keep avoiding it because I usually don’t like period stuff. It sounds like I need to give it a try with praise like that!

Killing eve and Sharp Objects have been on my list too, they both sound absorbing. Great list!!

    1. You should definitely give Peaky Blinders a try! It has a fresh, modern feel to it even though it is a period piece. The soundtrack helps a lot in that regard I think. Killing Eve and Sharp Objects are both incredibly absorbing and very binge-worthy. Hope you enjoy them!

  3. This is a great post, thanks! I can never seem to find good stuff to watch out of the gazillion things available, so it’s fab to have some recommendations to look out for. I have just finished the first two series of The Unforgotten – highly recommended if you haven’t seen it. 🙂

  4. I read Sharp Objects and have always wanted to watch the show! Thanks for making me want to start it 😉 I LOVE Peaky Blinders as well, but haven’t watched their latest season because I thought it was a little too slow-paced.

    1. I hope you enjoy the series as much as you did the book, Ayunda! I’ve heard that there are a few differences between the two, but nothing too drastic I think. Glad you’re a Peaky Blinders fan as well! The recent season was definitely slower in places, but there are some HUGE dramatic moments in later episodes.

      1. Now you just made me want to watch Peaky Blinders again! And I will also try and find a place where I can watch Sharp Objects, cause it’s not on my Netflix, I believe.

      2. It’s such a phenomenal show, isn’t it?! I never get tired of re-watching it.
Sharp Objects just aired on HBO here in the US, but hopefully it is (or will be) available to watch other places too.

    1. Thanks, Jess! I hope you’ll enjoy Peaky Blinders if you give it a try. It’s an excellent show in so many ways. I haven’t read Sharp Objects, but I was very impressed with the series. I think it’s worth a watch for the acting and the atmosphere alone.

  6. I must try Peaky Blinders again, it was just too violent for me, but maybe now I’m prepared – your picture doesn’t help though!! Younger sounds fun, it’s always good to have some recommendations. Thanks!
