This week I’m waiting on: Once Upon a River by Diane Setterfield
Expected Publication: January 8th, 2019
From Goodreads:
A dark midwinter’s night in an ancient inn on the Thames. The regulars are entertaining themselves by telling stories when the door bursts open on an injured stranger. In his arms is the drowned corpse of a little child.
Hours later the dead girl stirs, takes a breath and returns to life.
Is it a miracle?
Is it magic?
Or can it be explained by science?
Replete with folklore, suspense and romance, as well as with the urgent scientific curiosity of the Darwinian age, Once Upon a River is as richly atmospheric as Setterfield’s bestseller The Thirteenth Tale.
How good does this sound?! The Thirteenth Tale is one of my favorites, and I hope Once Upon a River will become one as well. The advanced reviews seem to be promising. Setterfield’s evocative writing, plenty of mystery, a dash of magic, memorable characters, and an atmospheric setting seem like a winning combination to me!
Are you interested in this too? What book(s) are you waiting on this week?
This sounds amazing, and I’m a huge fan of the title and cover too. Hopefully it does not dissapoint!

In that case, I can’t recommend her first novel The Thirteenth Tale highly enough.

I’m really excited about this one. I loved The Thirteenth Tale but was rather disappointed in Setterfield’s follow up, Bellman and Black. I’m hoping that she’s through her sophomore slump and that Once Upon A River is as compelling and surprising as The Thirteenth Tale!

I haven’t read Bellman and Black, but I know that a lot of people were disappointed with it. It seems like Once Upon a River is being well-received, so I’m cautiously optimistic!

Sounds good! I’ve only read Bellman & Black and found it well written but let down by the lack of a strong plot. However, I d still like to read more of her – I look forward to hearing what you think of this one when you get to it!

I’ve got the Thirteenth Tale to read after hearing so many good reports, so hoping I’m as eager to read this one after picking that up!
