Cheers to Classics Club Spin #20!
On Monday, April 22nd, a number from 1-20 will be chosen and I will then have until May 31st to read the book from my list that corresponds with that number.
Even though I never so much as opened my pick for the CC Spin #19 (a re-read of Evelina by Frances Burney), I’m excited to jump back in for this round. I’ve been craving a great classic lately, so I can’t wait to see which one the spin gods have in store for me.
Here’s my list:
- Night and Day by Virginia Woolf
- A Passage to India by E. M. Forster
- A Lost Lady by Willa Cather
- The Diary of Anne Frank (RE-READ)
- The Custom of the Country by Edith Wharton
- The Crowded Street by Winifred Holtby
- The Portrait of a Lady by Henry James
- The Voyage Out by Virginia Woolf
- Excellent Women by Barbara Pym
- The Three Musketeers by Alexandre Dumas
- The Hunchback of Notre-Dame by Victor Hugo (A Recent Addition to my CC List)
- A Tree Grows in Brooklyn by Betty Smith (RE-READ)
- The Heart is a Lonely Hunter by Carson McCullers
- Watership Down by Richard Adams
- Love in a Cold Climate by Nancy Mitford
- Westwood by Stella Gibbons
- The Beautiful and Damned by F. Scott Fitzgerald
- Emily of New Moon by L. M. Montgomery
- Right Ho, Jeeves by P. G. Wodehouse
- The Ladies’ Paradise by Émile Zola
Which classic would you most like to see me read? Are you participating in this #ccspin?
Great list, Jessie! A Lost Lady, Excellent Women &The Heart is a Lonely Hunter are all favourites big mine, so I hope you get one of those 🙂

Thanks, Juliana! Glad to hear you love those three. I’ll be very happy if any of them are chosen!

Emily of New Moon is lovely. Excellent Women is also a good read, as is Love in A Cold Climate.

I will be thrilled if any of those get chosen! I might have to pick one or two of them up soon even if they aren’t. They all seem charming and perfect for spring.

For some reason I tend to associate Barbara Pym for autumn but I don’t know why! I don’t think that Excellent Women has any content I’d consider “autumnal” really…

I wonder if everyone is wanting to read The Hunchback of Notre-Dame now? I know I am! The Three Musketeers is a fun and exciting romp and I quite enjoyed The Voyage Out. Happy spinning, Jessie!

Thanks, Cleo! I know Hunchback of Notre-Dame is back on the bestseller’s list in France and I wouldn’t be surprised if that’s the case in other countries too. Glad to hear that Three Musketeers is as fun as it sounds and that you enjoyed The Voyage Out.

Great list! I recently picked up A Lost Lady, and of course no list would be complete without some Virginia Woolf.

Thanks, Joel! I really need to read more Cather and more Woolf, so I’ll be very happy if any of those are chosen.

We share Night & Day this spin. I’m trying to read Woolf in chronological order, so I read The Voyage Out a couple of years with great enjoyment, N&D is next up for me.
I’ve seen Watership Down on a few lists; it’s tempting me into a reread.

That’s such a lovely idea to read Woolf’s work in chronological order! Maybe one of us will end up with Night & Day as our pick this time. Watership Down does seem extra perfect for this time of year. I have a feeling that when I do finally read it, I’m going to wish I had read it ages ago!

Great list. However, if you have not read The Pursuit of Love by Nancy Mitford, you should read that before Love in a Cold Climate, which is a sequel. Both are very enjoyable books.

Thanks, Michelle Ann! Don’t worry, I read and loved The Pursuit of Love and am excited to continue the series. I might even have to pick it up soon if it doesn’t get picked during this spin!

Nice list! Pretty much any of them would be good but of course the Woolf is very special!

Thanks! I’ll be very happy if either Night and Day or The Voyage Out gets picked this round. I’m way overdue on a Virginia Woolf fix!

Great list! We share A Tree Grows in Brooklyn albeit with different numbers so we can’t both be lucky on that one 🙂 It’s years since I read Nancy Mitford but I always enjoyed her books. Emily of New Moon and Watership Down – both much enjoyed, although I tried a re-read of W D and couldn’t get on with it at all. Strange how some books just seem to fix themselves to a certain point in one’s reading life and refuse to budge! And Woolf…. both ought to be on my own list but I have nothing by her on my full list at all. I should remedy that!

Thanks, Sandra! Would this be your first time reading A Tree Grows in Brooklyn? If so, I hope it will be your spin pick! It’s such a lovely coming-of-age story with one of the best bookish heroines ever written. I’ll be very happy if any of the Woolf, Love in a Cold Climate, Watership Down, or Emily of New Moon get chosen. They are all some of the ones I’m most looking forward to reading. And you’re so right about some books being more significant at certain times in our life. I sometimes wonder if books I consider to be my favorites would still be my favorites at this point, or if they are instead books I’ve outgrown.

Yes, it will be my first read of A Tree Grows…, Jessie. I saw the film so many years ago and when I learned there was originally a book I was desperate to read it. Funny how some books just never quite get to the top of the pile. At least it’s now so long ago that I saw the film that there’s little danger of one tainting the other. Successful spin or not, I will get to this one soon!

You have quite a few on your list that I want to read. I started reading The Count of Monte Cristo, but tapped out because I had so many books going including Les Miserables. There have been quite a few people coming in to the bookstore asking for A Tree Grows in Brooklyn.I keep meaning to check it out because it does sound interesting. Anyway, happy spinning.

Nice list! I enjoyed “Excellent Women” recently, my first Pym. “Watership Down” would be fun for spring. I ought to reread it now. The only overlap with my list is “A Tree grows In Brooklyn”, which seems to be getting a lot of comments. I’m hoping for that one, which is #10 for me. Good lluck with the reading!

Great list! The Three Musketeers is great fun, but so is anything by Wodehouse. I wish I could tell you my opinion of Emily of New Moon, but it’s been so long since I read it that I don’t remember it at all. I hope you get a book you love!

So many wonderful books on your list! I know you’ll love Excellent Women and The Crowded Street. I’m also curious about Emily of New Moon as I haven’t read it. I’m so looking forward to finding out my spin number! Best of luck with your pick!

Jessie, I would love you to get The Three Musketeers by Alexandre Dumas, but I am late to commenting so I already know what the result is!

There are some lovely books on your list but I see (because I’m late to it!) that’s it’s number 19 so you’ve got Jeeves and Wooster, which is what I was hoping for! I do hope you enjoy it and then you still get to read all those other lovely books!
