Top Ten Tuesday: Books I’d Slay a Lion to Get Early

At first I though I might have a difficult time coming up with ten books for this list, but once I got started, I realized there were so many upcoming releases I am dying to read.

 

The Clockmaker’s Daughter by Kate Morton (Expected Release Date: October 9th)

Kate Morton is an auto-buy author for me. I was a tiny bit disappointed in Lake House, her last novel, but I have high expectations for this one. The historical timeline centers around a group of Victorian era artists and a tragedy that occurs during a summer gathering at a country estate. *Sings* These are a few of my favorite things…

 

The Corset by Laura Purcell (Expected Release Date: October 4th)

I loved, loved, loved Laura Purcell’s The Silent Companions, and am thrilled she has a new novel coming out so soon. This is another Victorian era historical fiction novel about a suspected murderess. I hope it will be just as atmospheric, gothic, and spooky as its predecessor.

 

Transcription by Kate Atkinson (Expected Release Date: September 25th)

Kate Atkinson has earned a spot on my list of favorite contemporary authors, and I can’t wait to devour this. Transcription is about a young woman’s experiences in MI5 during WWII and at the BBC after the war is over. Needless to say, I am very much on board. I’m hoping it will give me a bit of  The Hour vibes.

 

Melmoth by Sarah Perry (Expected Release Date: October 16th)

I’m still not over how good The Essex Serpent was, but Melmoth sounds like it could be even better. It’s sure to be dark, gothic, fantastical, incandescent, and gripping.

 

The Lady’s Guide to Petticoats and Piracy by Mackenzi Lee (Expected Release Date: October 2nd)

Mackenzi Lee’s The Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue was delightful, whimsical, romantic, adventurous, and hilarious. It was such a lovely reading experience, and one I can’t wait to repeat with this semi-sequel. I adored Felicity and am very happy she will get her own story to tell.

 

Old Baggage by Lissa Evans (Expected Release Date: June 14th)

After loving Their Finest, I’ve been excited to read more of Lissa Evans’ immersive historical fiction. Old Baggage is about a former suffragette who is looking for a place to channel her energy and passion now that the vote. But how will she carve out a place for herself in a society which sees little value in a single, childess, middle-aged woman?

 

Ghost Wall by Sarah Moss (Expected Release Date: September 20th)

So I still haven’t read anything by Sarah Moss, but from everything I’ve gathered, I will be very surprised if she doesn’t become a new favorite. Ghost Wall sounds like a novella right up my alley. It combines history, archeology, a coming-of-age plot, and family drama. It also sounds perfectly dark and perhaps a bit creepy and terrifying; in other words like a perfect autumnal read.

 

Spring by Ali Smith

Autumn and Winter were both stunning and surprising, and I can’t wait till Spring is sprung.

 

Imogen Hermes Gowar’s Second Novel

I am on tenterhooks waiting to see what this phenomenal new writer does next. The Mermaid and Mrs. Hancock was a vivid, gritty, transportive, stunningly written work of historical fiction and I would like more of the same on my bookshelf please.

 

Sarah Waters’ Next Novel

I don’t even need to know what it’s about to know that I need it in my life. All of the Sarah Waters novels I’ve read so far have been five-star reads, and I have no reason to think her next novel will be any different. Now if only there was any word about when we could expect to see it published…
