Announcing the Persephone Readathon #3!

Since we’re almost halfway through the reading year, what could be better than a celebratory readathon?!  I’m happy to announce that the Persephone Readathon is back for a third round.

Whether this will be your first Persephone book* or your one hundredth, I hope you’ll join me for ten days of reading, reviewing, chatting, and celebrating all things Persephone.

The Persephone Readathon #3 will run from Friday, May 31st through Sunday, June 9th, 2019.

As before, this will be a laid back readathon; read as much or as little as you’d like. The goal is simply to enjoy reading and discussing all things Persephone Books.**

*What are Persephone Books, you may ask? Persephone Books are a London based independent publisher and bookseller, who specialize in neglected books by (mostly) women writers from (mainly) the mid-twentieth century. You can view their website here, and read more about them here and here.

**At this time, Persephone has published 132 books (Full list here). Many of these titles can also be found from other publishers, and some books are even in the public domain and available for free download. You do not have to only read editions published by Persephone. Any edition of these 132 titles counts for this readathon. I know Persephone books can be expensive and difficult to track down, especially outside of the UK. Here in the US, I’ve had good luck with Abebooks for great prices on secondhand copies, and Book Depository for free shipping. Don’t forget to check your local library too!

  4. Perhaps you can help me on the search for Persephones. I’ve checked at my library whether I can search by publisher – but no, not possible. When I look on Abebooks or Better World books etc they don’t record/categorise by publisher. Why ever not! I would love to be able to search by publisher for both Persephome and Pereine but I haven’t been able to find a way – other than by author, one by one which is slow. Do you have any suggestions?

    1. Hi Robin! Here’s how I find Persephone Books on Abebooks:

      -From the search book on the main page, click on the “More search options” link in the lower right corner next to the large Search button
      -Scroll down to the “Publisher” search field and type in Persephone Books
      -You should get plenty of results that you can then filter or search by price, title, author, etc

      As for library books, I played around on
      world cat.org, and think I’ve discovered a hack:

      -Search for “The Making of a Marchioness”
      -Click on the book’s entry (make sure it’s for a Persephone edition)
      -At the top of the page, there should be a link under the “Series” section that says “Persephone Book”
      -Clicking on that should bring up a whole list of Persephone titles
      -Then even if your library doesn’t carry a certain title, maybe they’ll be able to get it for you as an Interlibrary loan

      I hope this makes sense. Let me know if it helps!
