Mid-Year Freakout Tag

I’m definitely in denial that we are more than half-way through 2018. It just doesn’t seem possible. In spite of this, I’ve really enjoyed seeing everyone’s responses to this tag, so I thought I’d finally hop on board with my own.

Best Book You’ve Read in 2018

I can’t possibly narrow it down to one, but here are six of my favorites:

Best Sequel You’ve Read So Far in 2018

34516974

The only thing close to a sequel I’ve read this year is Winter by Ali Smith.

New Release You Haven’t Read Yet But Want To

After loving The Song of  Achilles, I’m super excited to read Circe.

35959409

Most Anticipated Release For the Second Half of the Year

There are many books I’m looking forward to, but I’m most excited for the release of Transcription by Kate Atkinson and The Clockmaker’s Daughter by Kate Morton.

Biggest Disappointment

I wanted to love Matt Haig’s How To Stop Time, but I found it a bit lackluster. There were parts I really enjoyed, but there was also a lot I found annoying and disappointing. I think it has the potential to make an excellent film though.

33590076

Biggest Surprise

I didn’t expect to love The Song of Achilles as much as I did, while Fingersmith certainly had the most surprising twists and turns.

Favorite New Author

I’ve read my first two Ali Smith novels this year, and look forward to exploring more of her work. Her writing is lyrical, playful, and surprising.

Newest Fictional Crush

Jean-Philippe de Sabran from the upcoming Bellewether by Susanna Kearsley. He’s a kind and dashing French Canadian Lieutenant from the eighteenth century; a romantic hero to root for.

37459366

Newest Favorite Character

It’s been the year of the Marys! Mary Shannon from Mariana is my favorite new fictional character, while Mary Wollstonecraft and Mary Shelley are two of my new favorite literary and feminist icons.

Book That Made You Cry

I don’t think any book has made me cry so far this year- the news has done that instead- but Little Boy Lost and The Hate U Give came the closest.

Book That Made You Happy

Heidi, The Lark, and Dear Mrs. Bird all brightened my mood when I really needed it.

Most Beautiful Book You’ve Bought This Year

The Mermaid and Mrs. Hancock hands down; it is one stunning book (inside and out).

What Books Do You Need To Read By the End of the Year

Shhhh, I’m trying not to think about all the books I said I was going to read this year. There are still SO. MANY. I’m going to be especially mad at myself if I don’t get to these:

How has your reading year been so far? Have you participated in the Mid-Year Freakout Tag?

    1. Thanks, Kristin! I’m glad to hear I’m not the only one to think so about How to Stop Time. I was especially disappointed because I enjoy so much of what Matt Haig has to say on Twitter, and I was really hoping to love his fiction writing too. I hope you enjoy Autumn when you get to it!

    1. Hope you’ll enjoy all three when you get to them! I really enjoy Haig on Twitter, but this was my first experience with any of his books. I might give his work another try in the future, but it might just be that his fiction isn’t for me either. THUG definitely deserves all of the praise and hype it has received, and I can’t wait for the film.

  1. So happy to see you enjoyed Fingersmith and The Song of Achilles! I can’t wait to read Circe either, although I haven’t read mine yet because I have second book nerves. I’ll just have to jump into it soon. Best of luck with the rest of your reading year! The Hate U Give, Romantic Outlaws, The Mermaid and Mrs Hancock, How to Stop Time and Little Fires Everywhere are all books I still need to get to, too.

    1. Thanks, Jess! Ugh, second book nerves are the worst. Hopefully Circe will live up to/surpass our expectations. Good luck with the rest of your reading year as well! Hope you enjoy all of those titles when you do get to them.

    1. Thanks, Karen! It’s been a great reading year so far, at least in terms of the quality of books. I’m glad to hear I’m not the only one who was disappointed in How to Stop Time. It’s such a shame, because I really enjoy Matt Haig on Twitter, and was hoping to love his work too. Hope you have an amazing rest of the reading year as well!

  2. SO MANY BOOKS I WANT TO READ!! I’m glad that you enjoyed Fingersmith as much as I did. I can’t wait to meet Jean-Philippe de Sabran, and read The Clockmaker’s Daughter. I haven’t read Winter yet, but I really liked Autumn, so I’m looking forward to it.

  3. Lots of great reading here! I laughed at the idea of a midyear freakout I’m savoring all the months of summer and refuse to think of it as midyear. It’s magic time!:)

    1. Thanks, Rachel! I’ll be very surprised if I don’t end up loving A Portrait of a Lady as well. Planning to finally pick it up this fall. Hope you’ll enjoy Song of Achilles and Dear Mrs. Bird as much as I did!

  4. Oh man, I have How To Stop Time on my shelf to read – now I’m nervous! I bought a Kate Atkinson AND a Sarah Waters book – my first by both authors – this year. I should get to them soon. I’ve heard amazing things about both! Little Boy Lost is another Persephone book I would like to add to my collection – it sounds really good. And I have a review copy of Belleweather – I’m excited to meet Jean-Phillippe!

    1. If it makes you feel better about How To Stop Time, I’m still glad I read it. I was disappointed overall, but there were aspects I did enjoy, and I think it has the potential to make an excellent movie. It’s definitely worth checking out I think. Ooh which Atkinson and Waters books did you buy? I hope you enjoy both, as well as Little Boy Lost and Belleweather!

  5. Jessie, looks like you’ve done some lovely reading so far this year 🙂 As for my own reading, it has all been good quality but lower numbers than I hoped. I haven’t taken part in the Mid-Week Freakout Tag, instead I have reflected on my reading half-way through the year with the Six in Six meme. Happy reading for the rest of the year! 🙂

p.s. ‘a kind and dashing French Canadian Lieutenant’ – I look forward to reading Bellewether by Susanna Kearsley even more now 😉

    1. Thanks, Jessica! I feel exactly the same way about my reading year; very happy with the quality but a bit disappointed with the quantity. Very happy reading to you as well, and I look forward to catching up on your Six in Six responses. Hope you’ll enjoy Bellewether as much as I did!
