Challenge Accepted: My 2018 Reading Challenge Plans

It’s that time to start thinking about 2018 reading goals, and I’m aiming high next year you guys. My main goal is to read the books that I own (whether physical or digital), plus I also want to read more classics and nonfiction.

I thought participating in several reading challenges would be a fun way to accomplish these goals. I’ve tried not to overextend myself and to pick challenges that will crossover with one another. We’ll see how it goes!

Without further ado, here are the 2018 reading challenges I’ve signed up for:

TBR Pile Challenge hosted by Roof Beam Reader

I’m excited to dive into this challenge and read some of the books that have been languishing on my shelves.

Mount TBR Reading Challenge hosted by My Reader’s Block

I’m going to set my sights on Mont Blanc, with the goal of reading 24 books from my TBR pile. If I complete the above TBR Pile Challenge, I’ll already be halfway to that goal.

I’m going to use this challenge as motivation for reading some of the books on my Classic Club list.

When Are You Reading? Challenge Hosted by Taking on a World of Words

The goal of this challenge is to read 12 books set in 12 different time periods, ranging from pre-1500 to the future. I’m hoping many of my classics reads, as well as the books from my historical fiction challenge below, will fulfill the 12 categories.

Historical Fiction Reading Challenge hosted by Passages to the Past

I’m aiming for the Victorian Reader level of reading 5 books.

Just a few of the Historical Fiction books on my shelves that I may pick up in 2018 are: All the Light we Cannot See by Anthony Doer, The King’s General by Daphne du Maurier, a Georgette Heyer novel or two, The Signature of All Things by Elizabeth Gilbert, Fingersmith by Sarah Waters, and The Butcher’s Hook by Janet Ellis.

Nonfiction Reading Challenge hosted by  doingdeweydecimal.com

I’m setting myself the goal of reading at least 8 nonfiction books in 2018. Ideally, I’d like to read one nonfiction title a month, but I wanted to give myself some wiggle room in case I decide to tackle longer works. I usually read nonfiction at a much slower pace than fiction as it is something I have to be in the right mood for.

Some of the titles on the top of my list are: Sapiens by Yuval Noah Harari, Quiet by Susan Cain, Testament of Youth by Vera Brittain, and All the Single Ladies by Rebecca Traister.

Are you participating in any of these (or any other) reading challenges in 2018?

  1. An impressive clutch of challenges; I’m assuming some overlap here or I imagine you reading every waking moment, or even sleep-reading! I’ve largely given up on challenges – – except for the Classics Spin – – aiming instead to go with my gut instinct. And I’ve also got fed up with failing to complete challenges because of life getting in the way. 🙂

    1. There should be A LOT of overlap! This will be my first year participating in challenges, so I’ll see how it goes. If I don’t complete them however, I’m not going to beat myself up about it. Like you, I’ll ultimately read what I feel like reading, and hopefully many of those books will fit into these challenges!

  2. Wow…I never thought to take part in more than one challenge! 🙂 But you’re right that there’s probably a lot of overlap between challenges. Excited for the upcoming reading year!

  3. I’m doing Roof Beam Reader’s TBR challenge – I like that you pick the books for it and stick to the list. I think I might join the historical fiction one, too – three of the titles on your list are ones I want to read! I plan to read lots of classics and non-fiction this year, too, but don’t plan to join challenges (except the ongoing classics club one). I actually read a lot of non-fiction this year, which surprised me, and I’m leaning towards them more and more now. Happy reading in 2018!
